Self-confessed Portrait and life-drawing junkie, Paul’s work invariably revolves around capturing the human face and figure. He prefers the challenge of working from life, and although his style is very likeness orientated, he still describes his favourite thing in art as “that moment when you get close to a work, and realise you’ve been deceived; the skill of the artist having actually given you very little to create the image you saw from farther away”. He says reducing an image to its barest form but still with the aim of giving the viewer a full and rich experience is his favourite challenge. Often favouring single light source poses or deep chiaroscuro, accurately capturing nuances in the balance between light and dark are often at the centre of Paul’s work. He has run several life-drawing and portrait groups and has delivered over 400 events, including his work at Milton Keynes Gallery, where he is an Associate artist. Originally from East London, via school-years in Margate, Paul now lives in Cambridgeshire.
