Lisa Takahashi
Lisa Takahashi’s colour filled paintings and prints depict everyday life in harmonious hues and intriguing textures. Her practice is process led and drives her to find qualities within printmaking and painting that will help to interpret the spirit of a subject in a visually compelling way. Consequently her output is varied - from the boldness of a graphic linocut depicting a peloton of hurtling cyclists, to light filled impressionistic landscapes in watercolour. Her belief is that experimentation with materials and techniques is essential to the development of creating compelling works of art, and that more often than not, the best works of art are unexpected, created when the artist is at their most engaged with the process.
Drawing is at the heart of all of Lisa’s artwork and is integral to idea development, whether she is creating a print or a painting. Drawing is simply another way of looking, and by slowing down the looking process in this way, compositions can be resolved and thought processes begun, about the materials and qualities that would best express mood, atmosphere and feeling. Her work has a number of influences, predominantly heralding from early 20th Century European artists, as well as 18th Century Ukiyo-e printmakers.
Lisa Takahashi exhibits her work extensively across the UK, and has previously shown work with the RA, NEAC, RBA, SWA, RSMA, RE and RWS. She has regularly taught painting and printmaking workshops for the past 14 years.
You may recognise Lisa from her appearance on Channel 5's Watercolour Challenge as the Devon Expert Judge in 2022 or from Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year, in which she featured in 2018; she was the Wild Card Winner and semi-finalist.
