Anne Blankson-Hemans
Anne studied Fine Art at the College of Art, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Ghana and came to live in the UK in 1984,
She is a multi-award winning artist and is the Vice President of the Society of Women Artists.
She has been exhibiting her work on a regular basis since 2007. Her paintings have been exhibited at the prestigious Mall Galleries in London, in annual exhibitions by the Royal Society of British Artists (RBA), and the Society of Women Artists (SWA). She’s also had her work exhibited in various other shows.
Anne has also been selected to take part in two BBC TV programmes; 'Show Me the Monet' (BBC2, 2012) and 'The Big Painting Challenge (BBC1, 2015). Sky Arts Portrait Artist Of the Year 2022
In addition, her works have been featured in a number of publications including 'The Artist', (July 2015), and the glossy French publication 'Pratique des Arts', (June 2017).
Anne sketches and paints ‘en plein air’ around the UK and abroad to collect material for her paintings. She then develops her larger finished paintings in her studio. She also enjoys being a member of several local and national painting and sketching groups.
Her works are held in collections in the UK, the USA, Japan, China and Australia.

“1. Painting medium of choice is oils. With this I am able to cover colour, composition, lighting, studio lighting, landscape, plein air, portraiture, still life, art materials, brushes (different types for different purposes), mediums, turpentine v white spirit, linseed oils, alkyds, drying mediums/agents, (usage and cautions).
2. The difference between the various painting media and why people make the choices they do… oil paint v acrylic paint, water soluble paints, gouache, egg tempera, water colour
3. Basic colours to have on your palette, the basic colour wheel, colour charts and how they can help your painting process. Basic explanation of colour tones, hues and saturation and how they help with making a painting look ‘right’
4. Setting up or starting a painting, composition, lighting, measuring distances,… why good composition makes a painting attractive
5. Sketching, drawing and observation and how this helps artists to ‘see’. Sketching materials, basic sketch kits, pen and wash, pencil, ink etc. What to sketch, when to sketch, sketching when you travel or on holiday, Sketchbooks, the different sorts and what you can do with them.”
