Russ has been painting since childhood, but in 1978 on the recommendation of sculptor James Butler (RA) he attended the Sir John Cass School of Art in London, and studied Portrait and Life Drawing. This was a turning point and afterwards took up the challenge of painting full- time.
He now paints mainly portraits of People and Animals, Landscapes and Wildlife ,in Pastels and Oils , and is a member of the Society of Equestrian Artists. Most of his work is commissioned and his patrons include the Duke and Duchess of Bedford, Lady Skeet, Mr. Samuel Whitbread and William Fox-Pitt(Olympic Show jumper). He has held many One Man Shows and his work is now hung in private homes in the U.S. and in Europe. A number of his
paintings have been sold to raise funds for various charities -including the British Red Cross, R N L I , RAF Assoc. and Oxfam Disaster Appeals.
Originally from Norfolk, he now lives in Lymington -on the edge of the New Forest, Hampshire .Prior to his latest move he taught Portrait painting at Adult Education Centres in Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire. He now gives demonstrations, Workshops and Appraisals to Art Clubs throughout the South Coast. During a 2 hour demonstration, apart from the important issues of composition, tone and colour the session is interspersed with some short anecdotes and experiences, which provides an easy and enjoyable atmosphere. Of equal importance is the transfer of tips and advice to Beginner artists and in this context. Russ provides some Helpful Hints leaflets for the members to take home with them.
