At school Art was my favourite subject and so, against my parents' wishes, I went on to study Art at uni, too. I became a portrait painter, then a specialist interior decorator, then moved on to painting 40ft murals for the Sultan of Brunei (yes, really!). Somewhere around that time, I started painting en plein air and qualified as a teacher, too. 

Of late, I rediscovered my slumbering artistic muse and have been followed around by creatures ever since(!), showing and selling my work at MIWAS, NEWA, TWASI, AAA, SOFA and UKCPS. I was shortlisted for the SAA Artist of the Year award in 2015 and was elected to full membership status of the Society of Feline Artists in the same year, meaning that I can - and should! - write S.O.F.A. after my name. I have also gone on to win Best in Show, Best Abstract / Fantasy Piece (twice) and Best Animal / Wildlife at various UKCPS shows during 2016, and have just become Secretary of the Association of Animal Artists. Whew!

I prefer working indoors these days, but I'm not afraid of going outside either, so 2017 will find me taking part in the Loseley Garden Show for the second year in a row, as well as a number of others - the Bath & West, New Forest and Romsey Shows, to name a few. I will also be appearing for the first time at the Reading Contemporary Art Fair. Come and find me at any of these if you happen to be in the area!

A fully qualified and vastly experienced Advanced Skills Teacher of Art & Design, I have acquired the talent of being able to talk and work at the same time. I'm therefore very comfortable with running demonstrations & workshops on different themes and for different groups. The first one I did as an official SAA Professional Associate, was in February 2016, where a warm and friendly crowd watched eagerly as I raced through the painting of a fox in oils and waited, rapt, to see if I'd ruin the floor. (I didn't.) (But I would have cleaned it if I had.)

I work in a number of different styles and genres from realistic to abstract, from my beloved animals, to landscapes and portraits, but every piece of art starts with an idea. In the initial stages, I like to keep that idea vague, sketching loosely. Then the way forward is allowed to suggest itself - something in the drawing or underpainting will capture my interest, my imagination - and it may not point to the direction in which I thought I was heading. That's when inspiration is truly allowed to kick in. For if I knew how a piece was going to look before I started, I wouldn't ever finish it. What would be the point?
